Communicating with color

Did you know colors can communicate? Colors can influence their viewers psychologically and can even cause subtle physical reactions. In your internal brand, it helps to be aware of what the color palette communicates.

 Reds are eye-catching, exciting, and demand attention. Red gets your pulse racing and can trigger powerful emotions, if used too much. Use red sparingly for calls to action and urgent headlines.

Oranges are fun, warm, and confident. Like red, orange calls attention to itself and is a great color for accents and alerts. Unlike red, it isn’t as associated with negative emotions and is not overused as easily.

Yellows are optimistic, happy, and youthful. Too much yellow can strain your employees’ eyes. It is best used in small amounts to highlight something of importance.

Greens are relaxing, healthy, and rich. Green is the easiest color for the human eye to process and is associated with growth, money, and health. It is one of the most useful colors in communication as it can both motivate and reassure your audience.

Blues are calm, secure, and dependable. Blue is the color of trust and loyalty. It is a very safe color to use in internal communications as its inoffensive but still strong.

Violets are royal, prosperous, and wise. Violet stimulates problem solving and feelings of sophistication. Use it sparingly as purples can create a mixed emotional response.

 It is important to note that response to some colors isn’t universal. Each person may have implicit biases for and against colors that others may not – due to personal experiences, upbringing, and culture. When communicating to employees in other countries, you should do research on how your internal brand colors are perceived in their culture. For example, yellow is associated with jealousy, betrayal, and weakness in central Europe and denotes scandals in China. Knowing your audience is integral when using color in communications.
