Sometimes you have to slow down before you can speed up. We get it, everyone is busy. But if your organization has developed a culture of being too busy to break, that could be damaging productivity. Taking short breaks regularly throughout the workday not only helps employees to feel more focused, but can also decrease stress, improve engagement and ultimately increase productivity.

Here are four productive ways employees can take a healthy break:

  1. Encourage them to engage in a few minutes of light exercise. Whether it’s taking a five-minute walk around the office or standing up and doing a couple sets of 30-second calf raises, getting the blood pumping can instantly increase energy and attentiveness.
  2. Provide a space for meditation. One of the most powerful ways to relax in a short amount of time is through meditation — which is perhaps why so many large companies, from Apple and Google to McKinsey and P&G, now provide meditation rooms for employees. Meditating is known to lower stress levels and improve overall health as well as creativity. Even just five minutes of peace and tranquility a day can improve mood and disposition.
  3. Promote undistracted eating. Breaking from work while eating seems like a no-brainer, but the habit of eating while checking emails or doing other work is widespread. Encourage employees to head to the break room or café to eat – or even outside. Concentrating on food (instead of work) while eating will benefit both body and mind.
  4. Encourage some friendly competition. Whether it’s hitting a daily steps goal, or getting those eight glasses of water per day, motivation from coworkers can be helpful in sticking to wellness goals. Incorporating games with a little competition or teamwork is also a great way to encourage collaboration and .

Finding productivity through wellness is all about balance. If employees think they’ll be reprimanding for “not working,” they’re less likely to take the breaks they need. It all starts with creating a culture conducive to wellness.
