BACK TO BUSINESS
5 COMMUNICATIONS PRIORITIES
With the major upheaval of Covid-19, employees and their leadership have been understandably distracted for the past several months. But for many companies, the future health of the organization depends on getting back to business and refocused on what it will take to succeed this year and in the future.
Although communications about employee safety will continue to be important, it may be time to begin talking about the ways in which we can move forward in our new normal. Here are five topics to consider communicating now:
1. 2020 MAPPING
How has Covid-19 changed your business priorities and expectations for the year? Loop employees in on how it’s impacted the business and leadership’s strategy for righting the ship, if damage has been done to the bottom line. Bring their attention back to the business priorities that haven’t changed — and remind them of the roles they play in the success of those priorities.
2. REMOTE ENGAGEMENT
If office employees will continue to work from home, you may have to work harder, or differently, to keep engagement high. The good news is that many employees seem grateful for the flexibility they’re enjoying in their remote offices. The less good news is that it’s harder to build and maintain relationships with colleagues, which plays a role in engagement.
3. EMPLOYER BRAND
Just because unemployment is high doesn’t mean you’ll have the right employees clamoring for jobs. If your company depends on engineers, programmers or other in-demand professionals, it will still be important to differentiate your company from others in the job market. Help employees and job candidates answer the question of why they would work here instead of anywhere else.
4. VISION AND PURPOSE
Why do employees do what they do? This is a good time to engage employees in leadership’s vision for the company and its larger purpose, and to help employees understand the role they plan in bringing those goals to life. Meaningful work that contributes to an exciting vision or purpose is one of the most effective ways to engage employees for the long term.
5. COVID-INDUCED UNITY
For many companies, the coronavirus pandemic has required working together in new ways. Has your company retooled manufacturing to provide masks or put engineers to work creating ventilator solutions? Or have you had to work across silos in new ways to deal with supply chain issues or customer safety concerns? Even if you’ve just rallied together in new ways to work from home, that new cohesion is something to celebrate.
