COMMUNICATIONS AUDITS

5 reasons to do them

Is it time to take a closer look at how well your internal communications are performing? Tribe can help clarify which of your communications strategies and tactics are most effective and where there may be some opportunities for improvement.

If you’re curious about whether you could use a communications audit, here are five reasons to consider one:

Current channels aren’t performing

Is the channel the problem? Or could it be the content that’s flowing through that channel? Sometimes a content overhaul is the most strategic move. If employees aren’t visiting your intranet, for example, it could be because they’re not finding fresh, relevant content when they do go there. If your newsletter has low readership, it might be improved with more interesting articles and design.

The media mix might be outdated

What worked five years ago, or even one, might not be working as well now. Have you adapted your content to include more digital media? Employees may be more likely to click on a short video of their colleagues or an interesting podcast with an internal thought leader than they would on a ghostwritten article that’s presumably from the CEO. The way we consume media is always evolving.

Not all employee audiences are being reached

We often find huge gaps in communications delivery that leave out large groups of employees. Often that’s the non-wired audience, when the majority of internal communications are delivered digitally. But other times we find there’s a large group of employees that require language translation, or that there’s an issue with a digital platform that not all employees can access. This is important knowledge.

There’s a major change ahead

If your organization is planning a transformation (or if your workforce is currently swirling in a tsunami of change initiatives), the stakes are raised for effective internal communications. How can you engage employees in the future — after the pain of all this change — if you’re not communicating with them effectively? An audit can give you a better view of the landscape you’re working with.

New leadership wants to know the current state

We often find ourselves engaged in a communications audit when a new CHRO, CCO or other high-level leader joins an organization. A good communications audit can help in getting up to speed quickly and provide a clear understanding of the current effectiveness of various channels and messaging. When mapping out priorities and strategic planning, it helps to know where you’re starting from.
