The anticipated color of the year is now revealed! Pantone’s 2023 color is 18-1750 Viva Magenta, a vibrant red with cool undertones that “promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration.” The Pantone Color Institute goes through a thoughtful process to pick a color that is relevant to what is influencing the world. That’s why designers across industries, including internal communications, pay attention to its announcement every year.
Why this color?
“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. Viva Magenta was inspired by the reds found in the cochineal, an insect from across South and North America. In a world full of technology advances, including Artificial Intelligence, it is refreshing to direct our attention to the genuineness in nature.
Why is it important?
Color communicates emotions, themes, moods and personalities. The Pantone Color Institute studies relevant topics around the world, and in a similar way, internal communications teams study companies to understand their values, goals and characteristics to match those with colors that represent them. This year’s color, Viva Magenta, is “brave and fearless”; a color filled with spirit and energy. The last couple years have been complicated in many ways, and Viva Magenta brings an attitude of hope for this upcoming year.
